Connecting to Home in Transitional Accommodation: A Qualitative Study on the Homemaking Practices of People with Mental Health Issues in Hong Kong – A Session for Practitioners
Following the positive response to last year’s seminar for service users, the research team from the Department of Social Work at The Chinese University of Hong Kong hosted the “Practitioner Session” of the study on 8 May 2026.
During the seminar, Prof. Angela Cui Jialiang presented the research findings, focusing on how to foster a sense of “at-homeness” within transitional accommodation and proposing a series of concrete strategies for practical implementation. A highlight of the event was the panel sharing by an expert team of people with lived experience in transitional accommodation. They provided first-person perspectives on how the feeling of at-homeness within a hostel serves as a critical catalyst in their recovery.
The seminar attracted approximately 150 social work practitioners joining via hybrid mode, reflecting the sector’s strong commitment to enhancing the quality of residential services. Each in-person participant was presented with a copy of the "A Research Drawing Booklet by People with Mental Illness." Through the drawings of the interviewees, the booklet aims to guide the public toward a deeper understanding of the aspirations and hopes that people in mental recovery hold for their ideal home.
