The Social Welfare Research Summit 2017-18 (the Summit) organized by the Department of Social Work, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, was successfully held on 18-20 December 2017. A total of 14 elite PhD candidates from different parts of the world as well as a group of PhD students from the Department were invited to participate in this research event.
The theme of the Summit was “Social Inclusion and Sustainable Development in a Polarizing World”. During the three-day event, students attended four keynote presentations, three round-table discussion workshops and two agency visits. The Department was honoured to have Professor Chiu Chi Yue, Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, to officiate the opening ceremony of the Summit. The Department also invited Professor James Côté, Full Professor from the Department of Sociology of University of Western Ontario and Professor Michelle Norris, Head of the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice of University College Dublin to act as our keynote speakers, together with our Department Chairperson, Professor Steven Ngai and Vice-Chairperon, Professor Lam Ching Man. During the workshops, students actively contributed their ideas on the three sub-themes: youth development, ageing populations and family for the final group presentations on the last day of the event.
This event was sponsored by the Office of Academic Links, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The agency visits were supported by Society for Community Organization (SoCo) and Caritus Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre (Sham Shui Po). Their support is essential for the organization of this Summit and the research development of the Department.
