This course provides a comprehensive foundation for social work practice with older adults and their families in Hong Kong and beyond. The course examines aging from biopsychosocial, theoretical, and practical lenses. Key topics include ageism and anti-ageist practice; major theories on aging; the biopsychosocial process of aging; cumulative inequality and social determinants of health; Hong Kong’s long-term care system; social isolation and loneliness; elder abuse and protection; dementia care; depression and suicide in later life; end-of-life care; and family carer support. The course emphasizes anti-ageist reflection, practical skills, and person-centered assessment, and ultimately equips students with systematic and integrative knowledge for working with older people and their families in interdisciplinary settings.
