The CUHK SWK 60th Anniversary International Conference on ‘Social Welfare Policy, Practice, Research, and Education: Towards an Equitable and Sustainable Future’ was held on 26 - 27 October 2023 at the Yasumoto International Academic Park, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Over 230 participants from various parts of the world, including Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Macao, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan, attended in person or via Zoom.
This conference was one of the celebratory events to commemorate our department’s 60th anniversary and provided an open platform for social work academics and local NGO practitioners to exchange knowledge. The primary goal of the event was to collaboratively work towards achieving an equitable and sustainable future through social policy, service intervention, practice research, and social work education.
The conference commenced with opening remarks from our officiating guests, Mr. Ho Kai-ming, JP, Under Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the Government of the HKSAR, and Prof. Alan K.L. Chan, Provost and J.S Lee Professor of Chinese Culture at CUHK. We were privileged to have keynote speeches delivered by Prof. Daphna Oyserman from the University of Southern California, Prof. Liu Junqiang from Tsinghua University, and Prof. Steven Ngai from CUHK. The conference featured three plenary sessions where speakers presented their project findings on various social work approaches related to social policy, service intervention, practice research, and social work education. Additionally, six interactive workshops covering topics such as poverty, domestic violence, youth, bodywork and mindfulness, as well as the integration of spirituality and social work practice, were conducted.
