The Department of Social Work, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Intellectually Disabled Education and Advocacy League Limited (IDEAL) co-organised a seminar on "Multiple Perspectives - The Path of Self-Determination" at the Yasumoto International Academic Park on 14 October 2023. Mrs Laura Yeung, the initiator of the "We Care We Share" programme and consultant at the IDEAL, shared their programme, which provides people with intellectual disabilities with life journey journals, professional counselling, and emotional support, aiming to assist individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families in establishing an inclusive support network. Additionally, Prof. Phyllis Wong, Assistant Professor from the Department of Social Work, CUHK, delivered a presentation on "Promoting Enriched Career Planning for People with Intellectual Disabilities through Self-Determination Approach." She shared her intervention method of teaching "self-determination" to Chinese people with intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong, and how the concept of self-determination is applied in disability services. This intervention method enables people with intellectual disabilities to systematically learn to set and achieve personal goals, cultivating their self-determination skills.
This seminar attracted over 200 participants, with the intention of bringing multiple perspectives to the industry and the public, deepening the understanding of self-determination, and encouraging families of individuals with intellectual disabilities to practice and support them in achieving a higher quality of life.
