The Department of Social Work, The Chinese University of Hong Kong organised an Electronic Learning Resources Launching and Sharing Session on “By me, not for me” for Supporting People with Intellectual Disabilities in Life-planning at the Yasumoto International Academic Park on 21 September 2024.
Since 2021, Dr. Wong King-shui, Phyllis, Senior Lecturer of the Department, and her team, based on her GRF evidence-based study results, have developed a group intervention curriculum with the purpose of enhancing the self-determination competencies of people with intellectual disabilities and allowing them to learn the related knowledge, skills, and attitudes through experiential learning. At the sharing session, Dr. Wong shared the tools, videos, and reference resources for learning problem-solving skills produced by the team and also designed a mobile application for people with intellectual disabilities to learn to set goals and plans. All products were co-created with people with intellectual disabilities. This curriculum not only allows people with intellectual disabilities to enhance themselves but also assists family members, social workers, and teachers to support them at home, service centres, hostels, or schools to enhance their self-determination competencies.
This seminar attracted more than 420 people to participate. We hope to bring multiple perspectives to the field and the public, deepen their understanding of the importance of self-determination and support people with intellectual disabilities to achieve a better quality of life.
